Botswana has officially nominated Dr Gevorg Tamamyan for WHO Director-General, emphasizing his commitment to underserved communities and the need for effective global health leadership.
President Duma Boko has formally proposed Dr Gevorg Tamamyan for the position of Director-General of the World Health Organization at the upcoming World Health Assembly in May 2027. The nomination highlights Botswana’s focus on improving access to healthcare and strengthening WHO’s institutional effectiveness amid global health challenges.
Boko cited Botswana’s own health system challenges as a basis for supporting a candidate dedicated to serving underserved populations. The nomination process includes a candidates’ forum in November 2026 and subsequent selection stages leading to the appointment in August 2027.
