Kgosi Khama IV questions the consultation process and cultural implications of renaming Botswana's Ipelegeng public works programme to Ikageng, citing concerns over traditional leaders' exclusion and national identity.
Kgosi Khama IV has publicly challenged the Botswana government's decision to rename the Ipelegeng public works programme to Ikageng. He raised concerns in Ntlo ya Dikgosi about the lack of consultation with traditional leaders, who are custodians of cultural heritage, and questioned the rationale behind discarding a name linked to Botswana’s founding principle of self-reliance.
The Assistant Minister of Local Government and Traditional Affairs responded that some citizens viewed the Ipelegeng name negatively, prompting the government to adopt Ikageng after considering alternatives. Khama’s objections focus on the adequacy of stakeholder engagement and the potential impact on national symbols, including the possible replacement of Ipelegeng on Botswana’s coins.
