WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Tierra Lindsey and Janai Tillman of the Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) volleyball team recently returned from a standout performance at the second annual Ditsala International Cup, held May 29-June 1 in Gaborone, Botswana.
The prestigious women's volleyball tournament brought together top collegiate student-athletes from the United States and national teams from across Southern Africa, creating a vibrant platform for elite competition and cultural exchange.
Representing the U.S. as part of Team HBCU Botswana, Lindsey and Tillman helped lead their team to victory, emerging as the Ditsala International Cup Champions.
WSSU Head Coach Christa Brown joined the U.S. coaching delegation, which also included representatives from Alabama State, Bowie State, Morgan State, Norfolk State, and Virginia State. Together, they worked to mentor and develop both American and African players, emphasizing teamwork, resilience, and skill development.
Beyond the matches, the tournament offered a unique opportunity for student-athletes to engage in meaningful cultural exchange. The U.S. delegation also visited the U.S. Embassy in Botswana, where they met with diplomats to discuss sports diplomacy, global leadership, and the role athletics play in fostering international cooperation.
"This experience goes far beyond volleyball. It's about building global relationships, promoting empowerment through sport, and giving our student-athletes a broader worldview," said Coach Brown.
